Administrative/Biographical History
Antoinette Mauro (nee Irrera), born around 1925, worked as a draughtswoman in the electrical department, first in Building 3 and later in Building 77. She began working at the New York Naval Shipyard in 1943 to help with the war effort and was laid off in 1945 at the end of the war, but was called back in 1947, resigned in 1949, called back again around 1950 and finally resigned in 1952. She corrected the blueprints after the draughtsman and engineer observed damaged ships and mark up the wiring on the blueprint. She spent time conversing with the other women in her department in and out of work, as well as socializing at nearby restaurants after work. She also assisted with the blueprints for the USS Missouri (BB-63) and watched Ms. Mary Margaret Truman launch the ship. In September 1949 Antoinette married Louis Mauro, who was in the Navy during the war and later served as the technical librarian at the Navy Yard. They had a son in 1952. Louis continued to work at the Yard even after it was decommissioned by the US Navy, until 1974.
Scope and Content
This collection contains the photographs and personal effects of Antoinette Mauro and Louis Mauro during their employment at the New York Naval Shipyard. The photographs depict Antoinette and her female coworkers, the launching of the USS Oriskany (CV-34), and Louis working in the library. Of note are two framed photographs of the Electrical Design Division at the New York Naval Shipyard during World War II. The collection also contains Antoinette Mauro’s drafting tools, her official recognition of service certificate from the US Department of the Navy at the end of the World War II, and a letter regarding Louis Mauro’s redundancy from the Naval Yard in 1971, a few years after the US Navy officially decommissioned the property.
