Administrative/Biographical History
Rose and Morris Hohenstein were siblings that both worked at the New York Naval Shipyard during the Second World War. They were born in Brooklyn, New York – Rose in 1920, Morris on October 2, 1922 – to Polish immigrants. Rose worked as a clerk while Morris worked in the U.S. Naval Medical Supply Depot. Morris died in September 1973.
Scope and Content
The photographs in this collection were taken between 1943 and 1944 and depict Rose Hohenstein with her co-worker friends in front the Naval Medical Supply Department and nearby parks. While Rose is identified as the woman in the plaid dress, the other women are unidentified. While working as a clerk in 1943, the Navy Department sent Rose a notification of efficiency rating, which is included in the collection. Also included in the collection is a certificate that Morris Hohenstein (Rose’s brother) was awarded in 1945 recognizing his service during the Second World War at the U.S. Naval Medical Supply Depot at the Navy Yard.
