Administrative/Biographical History
Born in March 1904, Ernest Frey left school at age 16 and started his tenure at the New York Naval Shipyard as an apprenticed electrician to support his family after his father's death. He became an electrician in 1924 and continued working his way up from Quarterman to Foreman to, finally, Master Mechanic Ordnance by 1946. He retired from the Brooklyn Navy Yard in August of 1961.
Scope and Content
This collection contains Ernest Frey’s professional papers and effects during his employment at the Yard, mostly commemorating his service and achievements during his 40-plus year career. Collection includes his Master Mechanic safety helmets, a certificate and an anniversary medallion of the Master Mechanic and Foremen Association, Frey’s desk plaque, 2 issues of the Shipworker newsletter. A retirement testimonial, signifying 41 years of service and signed by several coworkers, rounds-out the collection.
