Description
Herbert Sugarman (1918-2004) began working at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1939 or 1940 in the sheet metal shop. His father worked there as a rigger, docking and loading ships. Sugarman did very well on the test to be placed within the Navy Yard, and moved on from the sheet metal shop to various other positions at the Yard. After serving in the Army, he worked for the New York subway system and spent some time teaching. During his interview, Herbert Sugarman (ca. 1920) talks about and explains the many jobs he worked on during his time at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He also details his work environment and some of the geography of the Navy Yard. Within the context of his Navy Yard work, Sugarman talks about salary, tests, supervisors, and union organizing. He briefly mentions his division being present at the time the Dachau concentration camp was liberated.
