Description
The Joan H. Geismar, Ph.D., Research Materials on the United States Naval Hospital Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York, were compiled while conducting research on the Naval Hospital Cemetery in Brooklyn New York for the US Department of the Navy, Northern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The product of this research, State of the Research: Naval hospital cemetery historical documentation, Naval Station, Brooklyn, New York (1999), was created in conjunction with TAMS Consultants Inc. to address undocumented military burials when the US Naval Hospital cemetery in Brooklyn, New York underwent a disinterment in 1926 to Cypress Hills National Cemetery.

The collection includes contextual documentation on the Naval Hospital and its cemetery, and letters concerning the subsequent disinterment and reinterment at Cypress Hills. Also included are files relating specifically to the capture, death and burial of the Fijian Chief, Vendovi, as well as some documentation on the addition of water closets on the hospital site. There are also fouteen registers and lists of individuals who were buried at the Naval Hospital cemetery and/or placed at Cypress Hills, which were obtained from over 20 federal, state and local repositories.
