Administrative/Biographical History
This collection was donated by Peter Stuyvesant Brooks. Peter Brooks is a descendant of Margaret Armstrong, who was married Commodore William Dayton Salter, a Commandant of the New York Naval Yard from 1849 to 1852. Commodore Salter was born in New York City on August 23, 1794, and died in Elizabeth, New Jersey on January 3, 1869.

Commodore Salter was appointed a midshipman from the state of New Jersey on February 2, 1809, was attached to the frigate "USS Constitution" under Commander Isaac Hull during the fight with the British frigate "HMS Guerriere," on August 19, 181. He was promoted to lieutenant on December 9, 1814, was made commander on March 12, 1831, captain on March 3, 1839, and commodore on the reserved list on April 4, 1867. He was in command of the Brooklyn Navy Yard from 1856 to 1859, and in 1863 was on a commission to examine vessels, from which duty he was relieved in 1866. 
Scope and Content
This series contains one item: a sword that belonged to Commodore William Dayton Salter of the United States Navy. The sword is 31 inches tall and was manufactured by W.H. Horstman and Sons, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company was in existence from 1843 to 1863 and swords of this style were manufactured around 1850. The ceremonial sword given to Commodore Salter by the Department of the Navy.
