Scope and Content
This collection contains one letter typed on board the USS Iowa in Tokyo Bay on the morning of September 2, 1945, describing the signing ceremony of the Japanese surrender as the events took place. The letter was written by Lieutenant Norman I. Turner, a 24-year old Navy Officer aboard the Iowa, to his twin brother, Lieutenant Donald C. Turner, an Air Force navigator. Their father, Marine Major Arthur H. Turner, was then serving as Judge Advocate on the permanent general court martial in BLDG 14 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Both the USS Iowa (BB-61) and the USS Missouri (BB-63) were built and commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
