Leo Markowitz was born December 28, 1910, in Brooklyn, New York and began working at the New York Naval Shipyard in February 1932 as an apprentice machinist. From 1932 to 1946, he worked in the shop as a machinist, then shop planner, then supervisor machinist. From 1946 to 1966, he worked in the administration as an equipment specialist, then mechanical engineering technician, and later as a supervisory mechanical engineering technician. He attended several training courses for supervisory positions, saving the manuals and awards he received. Markowitz was terminated from his position when the Navy Yard closed in 1966. He died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on January 9, 2000.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of personnel documents, including personnel action forms, attendance records, resumes, applications, and other records regarding employment at the New York Naval Shipyard from 1944 to 1966. There are also awards for special services and training programs that range from 1943 to 1966. Several (14) undated photographs depict Markowitz visiting factories and posing with groups of individuals, one of which is dated May 6-10, 1957 for the 13th Annual Tools and Tooling Standardization Conference at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Finally, there are 2 v-mail letters, a written draft of a position description, 2 writing training manuals from the Navy Department, a typed position description, and an informational packet from the Navy Purchasing Office, dated November 12, 1963, entitled “Course in Purchasing Management for Requirements and Technical Personnel.”
