- John Joseph Holford Sr. was born on October 19, 1911. Holford began working at the Brooklyn Navy Yard around 1941 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. During World War II, he served as a Fireman First Class on the escort aircraft carrier USS Mankin Island (CVE-93) in the Pacific until being honorably discharged in 1945. Holford returned to the Yard after the war and worked as a heavy trailer truck driver until 1966. On at least three occasions (1958, 1960, and 1963) he received a safe driving award. Holford died on November 19, 1970.

- This collection contains the memorandum that employees received on July 1, 1965 notifying them that there would be a reduction in force until the ultimate closure of the New York Naval Shipyard on June 30, 1966. His identification badge, issued on February 11, 1960, is also from this period of the Navy Yard.
