- Joseph F. Rogers was born on December 13, 1919 in Manhattan. He began working at the Brooklyn Navy Yard sometime in 1939 or 1940 and worked as a machinist in the Ordnance Shop. During World War II, Rogers served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. During his military service he trained as a salvage diver aboard the U.S.S. Alcor, a destroyer tender and repair ship. Following the war, Rogers returned to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, becoming a supervisor Leadingman Machinist in Shop 36 in the Production Department. As a result of the Yard’s reduction in force, Rogers retired on September 10, 1965. Following his service at the Yard, Rogers trained as a teacher and taught industrial arts at Far Rockaway High School and William Cowper Junior High School 73 in Maspeth, Queens. He lived in Rosedale, Queens and Commack, New York.
- Scope and Content
- This collection consists of nine bound manuals related to Joseph Roger’s work as a machinist in the Ordnance Shop. Five manuals deal with the construction, operation, and maintenance of a variety of anti-aircraft guns, while four others are Navy training courses for Fire Controlmen and Electronic Technician’s Mate. There is also a marine engineer’s manual. The collection also includes a framed New York Daily News newspaper from the Yard’s closure, dated June 19, 1966 and the tool box and some tools used by Rogers.
