Louis H. Kaplan was born on September 29, 1893 and was first hired at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on January 13, 1912. Originally hired as a typewriter, he was promoted to a clerk in 1916. During World War I he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on August 8, 1918, serving as a Chief Gunners Mate, and was discharged from the service on March 2, 1919. After his military service, Kaplan resumed working at the Yard as a clerk. Over the course of his 44-year career at the Yard, Kaplan held a series of jobs including Supervisory Clerk, Personnel Administrator, and Supervisory Personnel Officer. He retired from the Yard on December 31, 1956 from the Industrial Relations Department.
Scope and Content
The materials in this collection include Louis Kaplan’s personnel record documenting his employment at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, as well as miscellaneous items related to his service. These items include two photos of the Machinery Division, a copy of the Shipworker, the Navy Yard’s newsletter, issued September 29, 1953, a speech given on Commander Pratt’s departure as Industrial Relations Officer, and testimonial material for Kaplan’s retirement in 1956. Furthermore, there are photocopies of materials including documents related to Kaplan’s service in the Naval Reserve. The collection also includes a copy of the 1941 A Short History of the Navy Yard in its original three-ring binder.
