Administrative/Biographical History
Mike DeLucia was born in 1941 and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended the joint engineering program at Pratt Institute and the Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of the Engineering Student Trainee Co-Op Education Program, graduating in 1964. As a student trainee at the Yard, DeLucia was assigned to the Safety Division of the Industrial Relations Department. In this capacity, he was aboard the U.S.S. Constellation on December 19, 1960 when a devastating fire broke out on the ship, which was still under construction. After graduation from Pratt, DeLucia worked in the Electrical Branch of the Physical Sciences Division of the Naval Applied Science Laboratory (NASL). During this time he attended New York University’s School of Engineering, earning a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering in June 1968. DeLucia had a successful career working for the U.S. Navy as a civilian electrical engineer, retiring in 1996 from the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Annapolis, MD, after 37 years of service.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of material related to the U.S.S. Constellation including photos, newspapers, and a commemorative disc. The 8x10 photos of fire-fighting and rescue efforts were obtained from the Yard’s official photographer and were taken approximately between 10:45am and 1:00pm on the day of the fire, while the polaroids were taken by Andrew Anastasio, a student trainee, three days after the Constellation fire. The collection also includes an 8x10 photo of DeLucia and Carl Rabstejnek, another student trainee, in front of the U.S.S. Constellation, as well as two commemorative issues of the Shipworker newspaper: the “In Memoriam” edition dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Constellation fire and a souvenir issue for the Constellation’s commissioning ceremony. There is also a commemorative aluminum disc embossed with the Constellation’s emblem which was issued for its commissioning ceremony.
