- George Gittleson was born on September 12, 1890, in Russia. He lived in Brooklyn and worked as a joiner/carpenter at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for over 20 years. He began his career at the Yard very briefly in 1917 before being drafted into the US Army during World War I. In 1939, what started as a temporary assignment with the Works Progress Administration, he returned to the Yard and stayed until retirement in 1964. He was married to Dora Kessler. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
- Scope and Content
- The collection contains the employment files of George Gittleson, both originals and photocopies. These records include applications; correspondence from the New York Naval Shipyard; various federal affidavits; union cards; union membership books; war bond certificates; copies of the Yard’s newsletter, the Shipworker; injury slips for compensation and various medical forms; and wage and pension data. Medical forms and correspondence detail his injuries and medical issues throughout his career. A few photographs of George and his family, as well as a document commemorating the USS Duluth as the last ship built at the Yard, round out the collection.
