Administrative/Biographical History
The U.S. Navy decommissioned the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1966, and in 1967 the Commerce Labor Industry Corporation of Kings (CLICK) was established to manage the yard on behalf of New York City. At that time, Seatrain Shipbuilding (owned by Seatrain Lines) signed a lease with CLICK to operate as a private shipbuilding facility on the Navy Yard grounds. Seatrain was in operation from 1967 to 1979, and provided job training and employment for thousands of workers while building four Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC), eight barges, and one ice-breaker barge during its tenure. Susan Detrich initially worked as a one-person art department for a printing broker whose client was Seatrain, and Detrich was assigned to work with the shipbuilding company. She then continued working with Seatrain after she moved into freelancing and Seatrain opened their own print shop in Weehawken, New Jersey. Throughout this working relationship, Detrich designed Seatrain’s monthly company newsletter, called the “Seatrain Scanner”, as well as other printed materials including employment brochures, broadsides, and posters for various company campaigns.
